Backreading Hong Kong

Co-created by Tammy Lai-Ming Ho (Cha: An Asian Literary Journal) and Chris Song (University of Toronto), “Backreading Hong Kong” is an annual symposium which brings together scholars, emerging and established, to share their cross-disciplinary research and findings on the city that we call home: Hong Kong, and to ignite stimulating and rigorous discussion.

• The 2026 symposium (Tuesday 10 March 2026 – Thursday 12 March 2026) will be organised by Tammy Lai-Ming Ho, Chris Song, & Helena Wu (in collaboration with the Department of Language Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough, the UBC Hong Kong Studies Initiative, UBC Asian Studies, and the literary journal Cha: An Asian Literary Journal)

• The 2025 symposium (Monday 17 November 2025 – Tuesday 18 November 2024) was organised by Tammy Lai-Ming Ho and Chris Song (in collaboration with the Department of Language Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough, the Richard Charles Lee Canada-Hong Kong Library of the University of Toronto, and the literary journal Cha: An Asian Literary Journal)

• The 2024 symposium (Monday 18 November 2024 – Tuesday 19 November 2024) was organised by Tammy Lai-Ming Ho and Chris Song (in collaboration with the Department of Language Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough, the Richard Charles Lee Canada-Hong Kong Library of the University of Toronto, and the literary journal Cha: An Asian Literary Journal; supported by the Jackman Humanities Institute Working Group on Hong Kong-Canada Connections)
